Dixie Outpost Barbecue is rated 4.9 out of 5 stars, based on 80 reviews!
Locals trying this place for the first time and we were blown away by the quality. I had the porker hot dog and it was probably the best hotdog I've ever had. Spouse had the catfish and also among the best he's had. Friendly service, plenty of outdoor seating. We absolutely will be back!
On our way from Richmond to Nashville. Googled "Best BBQ in Bristol" and looked for something near the highway. We made the right call. BBQ was great. Several sauces to chose from, ask for a cup of the spicy stuff (I forgot the name). Get the okra as a side!
I stopped here for lunch while traveling down I81. So glad I did. Great hotdogs, bbq and sides in a place with a very cool vibe. Stop here and support a local business you won't be sorry. Tip: try the banana pudding.
We found this place on Yelp while heading south on interstate 81. After 9 hours on the road, we were ready for some southern bbq. It's a no frills spot with lots of outdoor seating under umbrellas, two indoor tables and a counter. We had the pulled pork sandwich and a catfish poboy platter with onion topped potatoes. Both excellent, especially the catfish with remoulade sauce. Fast service and very friendly staff. This was exactly what we were looking for.
This was my first time eating at the Dixie Outpost and it was absolutely amazing! The food was definitely some of the best BBQ I've ever had, and the service was excellent. I will be back for sure, and I definitely recommend this place for great BBQ and service.
Absolutely amazing! Huge flavor and portions. Staff was incredibly nice! Highly recommended.
Best catfish I've had in a long time. BBQ was awesome. We drove 2 hours to get here, and will definitely be back.
Oh my goodness! FLAVOR OVERLOAD!!!
When we travel we like to find out of the way places that are locally owned. The Dixie Outpost hit the spot. The food is amazing & the service is impeccable!
I had the pulled pork with Mac n Cheese & the onion potato's. My husband had brisket, bbq beans and coleslaw. We also shared the fried pickles (in cornmeal) everything was so delicious. We couldn't eat everything so we packed it to go.
If you're driving through or even if you're not..you need to visit the Dixie Outpost BBQ you will leave completely satisfied and stuffed!
I am hooked on the great food and service. I am homebound due to being disabled and they have been sweet enough when they are not busy to deliver to my home. The owner and his girlfriend are great. The pork tenderloin sandwich with the fries are my favorite.
I have eaten there several times all of which have been delicious. I've had many different things on the menu all of which have been good. Love their Barbecue sauces as well.
Great food, friendly staff and an awesome environment to eat in.
Tried this place on a whim while traveling and the charm did not disappoint! Very uniquely decorated -- lots of pig related items, found objects repurposed into decor, fan art, etc. The bus is probably my favorite part! Inside you'll find hand painted tables with booth benches and barstools. They even give you a sharpie to write or draw on the walls of the bus with.
We met the owner's girlfriend, who was especially enthusiastic about their menu and had some really creative ideas about where their future was taking them. She brought our food to us and went through all the sauces, telling us how the pork was made, etc. You could tell she was passionate!
My boyfriend and I both got the 4oz pork sandwich and split fries and the mac n cheese. The pork was flavorful, sauces were tasty (honey chipotle was our favorite) but my bun got kinda soggy and I sort of wondered if the mac n cheese was store bought. We also ordered 4 buffalo wings, just to try them out. They weren't bad, but not my favorite. I think coleslaw comes with your meal, but we don't eat slaw so I can't rate it! However, portions were good for the price we paid.
Their menu was fairly extensive and a little overwhelming for someone who's never been there before. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I think less is more. Either way, we grabbed a to-go menu to look over since we travel through the area maybe once a month.
All in all, it's a good, local business run by pleasant, friendly people. Go support em!
The food is amazing and the service is exceptional. Sweet, southern hospitality. They have a old school bus they outfitted for seating and it's possibly the coolest thing ever! My son loved it. We will definitely be coming back next time we are around.
Well.... I had a coupon, so I had to try!! It was very delicious. Most everything is prepared at the restaurant. The pulled pork and chicken are not dry and the sauces pair well. The homemade chips are made daily and warm when purchased rather than 2 days old. The macaroni and cheese and potato salad is very good.
Even though this is the type of restaurant you just drive by because of its unassuming look from the road, this is definitely one you want to stop in and grab some delicious BBQ. Smoked pork had flavor that accommodates most everyone's palate. Just enough smoke flavor but not overwhelming for those who dont like smoke in their food. Pricing is in line with a good smoked pork. So next time you driving through Blountville, stop in and grab a plate or sandwich, you'll be glad you did.
My husband and I are currently traveling through and decided to find the really good local restaurants. Dixie Outpost ROCKS!!! They left me no choice but to leave *****. I am no stranger to BBQ. I used to work at a BBQ place and I think nothing of making my own. There are very few BBQ restaurants that I will eat at more than once. If I lived here, I would frequent this place. We had 3 meats, 4 sides, 5 sauces and the banana pudding.
For the meats we had, chicken, pork and brisket. The brisket and pork were amazing! The chicken was just not as moist as I like.
The sides; fried okra and dill pickles, BBQ beans and Mac-n-cheese. The fried okra and dill pickles were very well done and served with home made ranch dressing. The BBQ beans were more mustardy and savory than I am uses to, but still delish. The Mac-n-cheese is a white mac-n-cheese. The noodles were not mush like a lot of people make them. The overall flavor was mild but still good.
They were out of the white Alabama sauce(poop).. They had 4 other sauces. North Carolina is kind of sweet & spicy, much sweeter than I am used to. Carolina Gold is well done, nice and savory with a little sweetness. Chipotle honey has a sneak attach, which is the type of tomato based sauce I love! Their house sauce is nice.
The banana pudding is a joy. I have not been to any places that make the pudding from scratch. It has a wonderful banana essence and was put together early enough that the vanilla wafers became part of the pudding instead of their own distinct texture.
If you are in Bristol for any reason, check them out. You will not regret it!
Holy Cow. And pig. And chicken.
So in the midst of our travels, the Mrs. and I decided to try a local joint, because you can have a chain restaurant at any time, but local joints are where the flavor is at.
So we found this BBQ joint, and headed out from the hotel in order to give it a try. It's a small little place. In fact, it's almost the same size as the school bus they've converted into a dining area parked right next to the actual restaurant. Funky dunky!
The Mrs. and I made sure we got a good mix of their offerings. Brisket, pulled pork,. smoked chicken, fried pickles, fried okra, baked beans and mac-n-cheese. Let's just start out with saying that if you go away hungry, it's your own damn fault. Holy buffet pants, Batman!
Their sauces are perfect, and suited to whatever flavor you want to add. The pork didn't need any sauce, in my opinion; it was just gilding the lily. The fried okra and pickles were OK, but the beans were lights-out great. The mac-n-cheese was mild, but had enough cheese to keep me happy.
And when we first walked in, the locals assured us that no matter what we ordered, we wouldn't go wrong. They were correct. It's hours after dinner, I'm still stuffed, and the food was excellent.
This is a cute little place with fantastic food. Do not miss the BBQ beans! We were tempted to get some beans to go. The woman behind the counter was super friendly and made us feel so welcome. We will stop by again the next time we pass through.
Stopped while passing through based on good yelp reviews. Great BBQ at a small local place. Pulled pork very good. As was brisket Mac & cheese and taters & onion. Cole slaw excellent, but BBQ beans were the best ever! We'll be back next time through.
Brisket sandwich is amazing. The highway is dotted with tourist traps slinging cheap cuts slathered in sweet baby rays and this is not one of those places. Amazing food with no pretense. Highly recommended.
Unique & friendly! Great BBQ! Loved it!
YUM. I stopped here with my family during a road trip and I'm sure glad we did. Coming from New Orleans and growing up across North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana, my BBQ expectations are high, and this definitely met the bar! The customer service is fantastic - the cashier was very helpful in recommending her favorite dishes and checked in to make sure we were enjoying our meal. I ordered the small sandwich (pulled pork) with a side of ocra and it was the perfect amount - I left feeling full and satisfied. I'm so glad we stopped here instead of a usual fast food joint - a true gem in Tennessee and worth the short detour! The town is also really cute.

Awesome food. One of my new favorites.
Loved the pulled pork, taters and onions and the service was great.
I love this place! My husband and I grab lunch here all of the time. The BBQ is awesome. The atmosphere is super cool. I love the variety of sides. Fried pickles are the best!
This is a great place. The food was amazing and the staff is the best. You must come and try them out.
THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING! The owner is such a sweetheart, and her excellent sweet tea proves it. The food was incredible and the atmosphere is even better. I'm so glad we decided to stop at this great local restaurant, it makes the trip from Pittsburgh, PA well worth it!
Great little place with a lot of heart, found this Jem of a BBQ restaurant just off the hwy, service was great. Got our food out pretty fast for an order of 5. Pork sandwiches were huge and smoked to perfection! Brisket was tender and the sauces were awesome. My buddy had a tenderloin sandwich and was just beside himself and it was gone before I got to sample it. The owner and cook were very cool, came out to see if everything was good and I told him everything was gone! We well be back on our way home. Better then Memphis!
Great food, great service and great atmosphere! We made a quick stop here on our drive to Asheville and thoroughly enjoyed it. Between the four of us we had the bbq platter, bbq sandwich and pork ribs- all delicious. The Mac and cheese was also a hit. Highly recommended!
Drove off the highway looking for someplace for food while traveling through Tennessee. Found this place through yelp. It was funky, divey, small, friendly, a true whole in the wall spot. Maybe I was just lucky, but I ordered Brisket on Texas Toast. The chef said a great choice because it just came out of the smoker. It was AMAZING. Seasoned just right, not too much salt. Tender oh yeah. There was enough fat which is important to me. Take away the fat from a smoked product and it becomes mediocre at best. Good sauce and not too much of it. Decent slaw, and thats all a had. Grabbed it to go and headed for my truck. I was just going to eat while driving but; one bite and I couldn't stop!! If this is an example of what they do they deserve the 5 stars. This sandwich was a 5 star never the less and I don't give 5 stars much.
This place should be your go-to stop if you need a lunch break close to hwy 81. You can eat inside, outside at benches (my choice), or in the bus they've converted into diner seating. I'm gonna predict that that bus will be packed very soon!
I went with the classics, bbq pork with cole slaw and beans - all so delicious! I also tried the taters and onions and pepper rings - great as well, and the sauces were killer. Staff was accommodating and friendly, hope you get to experience this BBQ soon!
This is what I expect when it comes to bbq. Ive made this a must stop passing through, and always a second stop coming back. Anything other than a 5 star rating simply means you dont know good 'cue.
the best BBQ in tennessee. has great pulled pork and brisket. honestly everytging is great. the service is amazing and theres barely a wait. the bus is super cool. ten ten out ten would go if you havent.
Very friendly staff, place is unique, got to eat BBQ on a bus! Definitely a first. And the important part was the BBQ was delicious! Had the pulled pork sandwich and briscuit sandwich and both were tasty!
variety of sauces i like mine plain and meat is filled with smoky gooey greatness
Love the food here
Awesomly fantastic! Best BBQ I've had in the state of Tennessee. Period. Try the taters and onions, and jalapeo pepper rings.
Awesome beef brisket and pulled pork. Both rank among the best I've had. Huge choice of sauces. Ask about the delicious horseradish sauce if you don't like sweet ones.
Fantastic! About four miles off Rt. 81, but well worth the drive. Full menu of on site cooked/smoked southern delicacies. Homemade sauces are fantastic. Lots of parking. Portions are enormous!
Awesome BBQ pork and you can't not try the ribs while you at it. Friendly staff and really fast service. Gotta Love Dixie Outpost!!!
Best pork, brisket, and wings in the Tri-Cities. Hands down. No doubt. Love the pig.
We love to call in for some "Pig Party's" when we have our monthly LAN party. Never let us down. Food is always great.
I Love BBQ and Dixie Outpost Actually DOES IT RIGHT. Of all the places In the Tri-Cities this place IS the best, and i'm really pick about my BBQ ( Just see my other reviews XD ) The Brisket is done right, the pork is good and By god they actually have pretty good wings too. all kinds of sauce to choose from like Alabama White, NC viniger, SC gold, and a killer "Sauce from Hell" ( No kidding that's the name XD ) I'm just happy that I finally found a place that satisfied my BBQ hunger. Bye Bye Ridgewood bye bye Partners.
Found this place on our drive from Nashville to Mass. We love stopping & trying local eateries. So glad we stopped at Dixie Outpost. Dave, the owner is very personable - perfect for us out-of-towners who enjoy meeting the locals. My daughter devoured the 1/2 rack of ribs & I ordered the plate of pulled pork - tho it was not very hot. The bus outside is a treat to explore. Stop here & you won't be disappointed.
Service can be slow sometimes as it can get really busy around lunchtime and only one cashier/server on duty usually, but the food is very good and the location is small, but homey and pleasant.
I eat here about once a week, and have had just about everything on the menu at some point. Super tasting and high quality food.
Try the brisket! The potatoes and onions are great as are the fried jalapeos!
Fabulous food, great prices, super friendly! Try the fried banana peppers. Outstanding!
Dixie Outpost Barbecue, Bountville, TN.
My travels have led me to several BBQ establishments throughout my life. Be it Kansas City, St Louis, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Memphis, Georgia, the Carolina's, and believe it or not Montreal. Smoked and pit, I have been there, done that.
That said, Enter Dixie Outpost BBQ, a quaint little, off the beaten path, dine-in or carry out mom and pop type establishment. They have a little 2 table, dining room with a bar with stools enough for 8. And if you need more room than that, there is a recycled school bus that they have re-purposed into a dining car. I have to admit, this place does have character. I was warmly greeted by the owner Dave, who had a few story's to tell and made you feel like he had known you all his life. My companion ordered the brisket and I the recommended pig plate with a side of ribs. The service was fast, the girl slinging the food in the back was just as friendly as Dave and came out to greet us as well.
Now on with the food...
The brisket was perfect, nice red to pink bark all the way around and my companion professed that it was indeed perfect. The pulled pork was nicely smoked and not soggy like most I have had in the area, I was able to choose from 6 or more sauce styles including their house sauce which was a sweet ketchup based KS style. I also tried the peach chipotle and also the vinegar based Carolina style as well. It was a nice change to be able to try different sauces, then a pork pile drowns in what they "assume" you want, just to cover the sogginess of their pork slop. But not Dixie Outpost. This was good BBQ. The ribs tasted like they may have been reheated, but were not bad. They were tender and did not fall apart with the first bite. I prefer to see a bite mark as I eat a rib to know it's done just right. They definitely are not Memphis ribs, but Memphis could take a lesson from Dave on smoking pork and Brisket.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DAVE!
We recently moved to Blountville from Johnson City, had no clue that such a gem of a bbq place would be right down the street! Seriously the best bbq place in the Tri Cities hands down. The owner is great & frequently there, great service!
Everything you could ask for in a super fun BBQ Pit. Excellent food, unique atmosphere, and affordable prices. Such a gem in the rough!
Driving through on the way to Nashville, found this little BBQ place just inside the TN line. They call themselves the "Best little dive worth the drive" so we decided to check them out.
The pulled pork was absolutely delicious! Really appreciate that the sandwiches come in little, medium and big pig sizes. Sides were very good (potatoes& onions, cornmeal battered fried okra).
Just wished that I had a little more time to look at the menu - the only one we found was posted right at the cash register and there were customers lining up behind us. Service got off to a rough start for us but ended up just fine.
Didn't get to try the hot dogs but they looked good too! Very cool decor, license plates and rulers etc. They definitely deserve a Diners Drive Ins and Dives nod!!!
Pulled pork was great! Service was fantastic.,,
it was absolutely delicious I loved staff was extremely friendly couldn't ask for a better expierience
Just fantastic dinner in the old school bus. The ribs, the Dixie pig plate, the wings with thia chili just all finger leaking good. The peach habanero sauce is the best I ever had.
This place is Amazing. Daddy of barbecue half rack is the real deal, mac and cheese super good. A must stop, price is excellent. Services as friendly as it could be.
Dixie Outpost BBQ had friendly staff, great Brisket plate. Loved the sauce, and you get alot for your buck. You do BBQ right!
OMG that was a ton of love put into that food. I have the blue plate special with fried tenderloin Seriously? The owner came out and let us try a new sauce he was working on and it was great! The whole family was completely stuffed. Price: very fair Atmosphere: very homey and down to earth Staff: was very nice Food: OUT OF THIS WORLD! Tanks Dixie Outpost BBQ , we will be back.
Best BBQ in the Tri Cities. The pulled pork at Dixie Outpost is full of moist, tender, smoked goodness, especially in the Hogzilla, which is a Bratz topped with pulled pork. You can't go wrong with that, right? All the crafted sauces add a depth of flavor not found anywhere in the area. The restaurant has a charming, eclectic atmosphere that would add a fun flare to any event or luncheon. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll consider Dixie Outpost your next favorite local BBQ joint. • • • Best BBQ in the Tri Cities. I have lived an eaten great BBQ all over the South and Midwest, I would definitely put Dixie Outpost in the top of my list of great BBQ. The pulled pork was perfectly smoked to perfection, you could eat it with or without sauce. I recommend their own Carolina gold. Thier house sauce is your typical Kansas City style sweet, not my type a flavor personally, but still very good. My wife had the Brisket and it has been almost 6 years since she was 100% excited about eating brisket. Bark was perfect, had a nice pull to it and the smoke was right on. We'll be back for sure. • • • I have lived an eaten great BBQ all over the South and Midwest, I would definitely put Dixie Outpost in the top of my list of great BBQ. Dixie Outpost is a relatively new BBQ joint in the Tri-Cities area. I've been five or six times and the BBQ has been delicious every time. The meat is moist and has a great smoky flavor. They have a number of different sauces including a mayonaise based Alabama White sauce. The fried pickles and potatoes and onions are great sides.

I love eating here and the bus makes a great eating area. I like the other items more than the bbq
